About VICTOR KORCHENKO
Born 1961 in Krasnodar, Russia. Currently residing in Toronto, Canada.
In 1980s I was a professional photographer working for research institutes. I was active as an artist in Russia in early 1990s, had an inaugural solo show at Yakut Gallery in Moscow.
After completing financial education in 1991 I made a career in finance and abandoned photography for 20 years.
Now I am returning to active artistic work and looking for a gallery representation.
Presented portfolio showcases my recent work created over the last two years and my earlier days large format photographs (12 Principles portfolio).
I am not interested in photography documenting world phenomena. I prefer to distort reality by making blurred, mirrored, kaleidoscopic or inverted images. A photographic image is then used to create an artifact decorated with smalti, glass beads, Swarovski crystals and gems. Obsession with decorative qualities of these materials comes from my Russian roots. Opulence and glitter of Byzantine era preserved in Orthodox churches’ interiors is the aesthetic ideal I am trying to reinterpret in modern day images.
